Past Initiatives

EMDI’s CSR initiativeSWAT – launched on 28th October, 2004, is an initiative by the students of EMDI. It is a youth movement against tobacco, operating at an awareness platform. Its endeavor is to make "staying tobacco free, positively cool". Anti - smoking campaigns aimed at smokers have had limited success because as much as they hate their habit, smokers are averse to taking steps to give it up. Our brief is clear: to persuade young collegians to never try smoking and to encourage those who have decided not to do so. As a student-led movement, we have the advantages of speaking the language of our target audience as well as greater credibility vis-à-vis adults, whose anti-smoking advice is often perceived as hypocrisy.

SWAT, speaks to every person affected by smoking, either directly or indirectly.

But at its core, the profile of the target audience is:

  • Educated youth between the ages of 12 to 21
  • Students who may be tempted to smoke at school or college, under peer pressure
  • Young professionals who may take to smoking as a so called “stress buster”

Thus our target audience is a vulnerable group of non-smokers, who will be receptive to our anti tobacco messages, than being directly asked to quit.

The SWAT teams over the years have taken various initiatives in the form of events to spread this message by organizing:

  • Smoke Free Bike Rally
  • College Festival Activities
  • Candle Walk
  • Live and Loud – Smoke free Rock Concert.
